Create Your Own Climate Action Map!
Follow this step-by-step guide to create a Climate Action Map for your own household! These steps can be modified if you're creating a map for a group -- just pick whatever climate action categories make sense for your organization.
Step 1: Motivational Image
Get in touch with your heart's motivation to act on climate change. What image comes to mind? Some options include the famous "blue marble" image of the Earth seen from space, a photo of an endangered animal or ecosystem, or a selfie of your family having a great time in a natural setting. This image serves as your goal and goes in the center of your map.
Step 2: Choose your paths
Choose the categories of climate actions you're willing and able to do. Most households will have steps they can take on the following seven paths: Electrification and Efficiency, Reduce/Reuse/Recycle, Transportation, Finances, Landscaping, Food, and Activism. For organizations, you may choose whatever path titles make sense. You can also check out one of our sample maps for inspiration. Draw your map and label your pathways. If you'd like, you may use our clickable pdf map and print it later.
Step 3: Choose your action steps for each path
Browse our action pages for ideas or generate your own action steps. The most important steps for you to take are the ones that work within your budget, lifestyle, and context. The actions available to city-dwellers and rural households will be different. Many steps will save money and qualitatively improve your lifestyle as well as reducing your carbon emissions. We all need to be doing everything we can to solve this crisis! This website includes suggestions for effective actions in each of the following categories: Electrification and Efficiency, Reduce/Reuse/Recycle, Transportation, Finances, Landscaping, Food, and Activism.
Step 4: Use your map to organize your climate action steps!
Post your map in your home. Check off the items as you accomplish them. Feel free to take your steps in whatever order and at whatever pace works for you. Let your family and friends know what you are doing! The best way to change the behavior of others is to set an example.
